I smile as the idea of ‘relevant bible teaching’ simmers away on my backburner. The smile is a response to the thought that came to mind as I consider Paul’s word to the Philippians – the joyful encouragement; the primacy of the gospel…advancing, despite man’s motivation; reliance on God by prayer and the Spirit for deliverance in and through all things…life and death; the progress and joy in the faith, ours and others.
David wrote, in Psalm 139, ‘where shall I go from your Spirit?’…being known completely by God. ‘How precious to me are your thoughts, O God’. Is my God relevant? Does He not know me? Does He not provide as the Shepherd of Ps23? Is God’s word relevant? Does He not know me? Does He not lead me to rest in green pastures and lead me beside quiet waters? He does indeed restore my soul!
So perhaps I waste my time with concerns over those who would like to create new categories…relevant bible teaching. Let their books and sermons fill the shelves and airways, He is God – we are not. As He brings me each day into His word and refreshes me with His thoughts, may my rest be in Him and my response be to Him.
And, may the expressed will of my Father be my desire today…‘that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.’ (Jn 6:40) such that ‘it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.’ (Phil 1:20)
