Are You a Church or a Club?

“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.  And his commandments are not burdensome.”  1 John 5:3

The following video excerpt from John Piper raises a very relevant question for the true church meeting together as the local church and ministering within and without of its four walls to the body of Christ worldwide.

We can look back over redemptive history and see persecution and suffering throughout.  We can see persecution and suffering being visited upon the true believers around the world today.  What might that look like visited upon true believers in the USA?  Have we come to rest in our monetary wealth more than the wealth of Jesus Christ?  Are we ready to be tested?  Are we ready to be sifted?  Will we love the children of God or will will we love our gods?

Are we His church?  Will we follow the Shepherd or will we scatter and not receive his refining fire?

“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who stands next to me,”
declares the Lord of hosts.

“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;
I will turn my hand against the little ones.
In the whole land, declares the Lord,
two thirds shall be cut off and perish,
and one third shall be left alive.
And I will put this third into the fire,
and refine them as one refines silver,
and test them as gold is tested.
They will call upon my name,
and I will answer them.
I will say, ‘They are my people’;
and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”                 Zechariah 13:7-9
