God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.
I write with a clear picture before me of a friend who is not doing well. I also write having found release from a recent season of darkness of my own. I write because I cannot be silent. God moves in a mysterious way; according to His own purposes and plans He moves and in perfection, brings all things into submission to Himself. He is above all; He is the Eternal Everlasting God. God reigns.
Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sovereign will.
Darkness is a real variable. It may vary in its intensity and it may vary in its longevity. It is a controlled variable. It remains always in submission to the Creator God who is Light. It is a weapon of the enemy and place of hiding/bondage for the unregenerate soul, but it is not a place to be sought or envied. God reigns.
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head.
Darkness is a real variable. It may vary in its intensity and it may vary in its longevity. It is a controlled variable. It remains always in submission to the Creator God who is Light. It is a mercy of the Sovereign God of all grace and under His administration, it is an eternal blessing for the child of God. God reigns.
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
We stumble in the darkness. We are made feeble in the darkness. We lose touch with all those things we have falsely learned to rely upon… sought after… trusted in; bar Jesus. This is His mercy. He gives us the very thing we need to die to ourselves. In the darkness, He does not seem a friend and He doesn’t seem near; rather His perceived absence opens an abyss of condemnation from the enemy of our soul. In the darkness, His love is a faint remembrance, His promise… an accusation of guilt and indignation. God reigns.
His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.
In the darkness, time is an endless eternity. There is no rising and setting, no noonday sun or midnight moon, nor brilliant path of celestial stars. In the darkness there is fear and there is pain, there is grief and there is shame. In the darkness, hopelessness seems to reign. In the darkness we do not see. In the darkness perspective is blotted out. In the darkness we are without Hope in this world. God reigns.
Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.
When the darkness presses in, there is but one salvation. When the darkness seems to bring us to the point of suffocation, there is but One who can reach through and obliterate the evil and restore sight to the blind and hearing to the deafened ear and faith to the fainting. With one Word He spoke, and there was light. God reigns.
With one Word, He speaks… and there is Light. Glory to God!
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
God does not… will not… leave us. We have Him to worship forever as Lord and King and we have His Eternal Spirit dwelling within as our seal of redemption; and, we have the Word of God… holy, eternal, living and active, sanctifying… sanctifying – making us holy.
From the Word of God… for our hope and His glory…
In that day the deaf shall hear
the words of a book,
and out of their gloom and darkness
the eyes of the blind shall see.
The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD,
and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.
(Isaiah 29:18-19 ESV)
Thus says God, the LORD,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk in it:
“I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness;
I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
a light for the nations,
to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.
I am the LORD; that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to carved idols.
Behold, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth
I tell you of them.”
Isaiah 42:5-9 ESV)
And I will lead the blind
in a way that they do not know,
in paths that they have not known
I will guide them.
I will turn the darkness before them into light,
the rough places into level ground.
These are the things I do,
and I do not forsake them.
(Isaiah 42:16 ESV)
I will give you the treasures of darkness
and the hoards in secret places,
that you may know that it is I, the LORD,
the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
(Isaiah 45:3 ESV)
I form light and create darkness,
I make well-being and create calamity,
I am the LORD, who does all these things.
(Isaiah 45:7 ESV)
Who among you fears the LORD
and obeys the voice of his servant?
Let him who walks in darkness
and has no light
trust in the name of the LORD
and rely on his God.
Behold, all you who kindle a fire,
who equip yourselves with burning torches!
Walk by the light of your fire,
and by the torches that you have kindled!
This you have from my hand:
you shall lie down in torment.
(Isaiah 50:10-11 ESV)
The hymn lyrics come from a man who knew darkness… William Cowper. A man God used to bring intensely wonderful hymns to the church.
