Love Your Enemies

Love Your Enemies…

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.  (Matthew 5:43-48)

We are all of us undeserving.  This is an eternal reality which makes the grace of God shine brilliantly.

For all the things that man and cultures have found to worship, I can understand sun-worshippers.  Not the ocean beach kind or the concrete poolside kind, but those who recognize the brilliance and wonder of the sun and all that it provides and who respond in a sort of worship.

By grace, God turns the sun-worshipper from glorying in the sun to glorying in the Creator God of the sun.  The God who makes his sun rise on the evil and the good does this.

This God of grace does this for His enemies.  He loves us; He prays for us (John 17, Luke 23:34) and He calls His sons to respond as He has responded to undeserving enemies.

Love my enemies?  Pray for my persecutors?  But how?

President Obama is a blasphemer, he is my enemy, no?  He is God’s enemy, yes?  Certainly he is in a different class of undeserving?  Yet he shares in the blessing of the sun and the rain just like you and I.

“When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His word, what a glory He sheds on our way.  When we do His good will, He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.  Trust and obey for there’s no other way, to be happy (joyful, content, peaceful, unburdened) in Jesus but to trust and obey.”

Obedience in the light of God’s word.  Obedience through and to Jesus Christ… true worship in spirit and in truth.  Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.   Rest in the sovereign grace of God.

O my soul, trust and obey.
